Dexter star Michael C Hall has admitted that he expects his character to "get caught" when the series ends.

The Showtime drama is expected to conclude in late 2013, at the end of its eighth season, with Hall telling Salon that he does not think his serial killer character Dexter Morgan will get a happy ending.

"I imagine Dexter is going to get caught one way or the other," he said. "And by that I mean, can we really expect him, at this point, to walk into the sunset? Or get off without a blemish on his conscience or character?"

The Emmy-nominated actor argued that Dexter as a whole depicts "someone slowly but surely [getting] caught".

"In a way, he is already caught," said Hall. "Once [his wife] Rita (Julie Benz) dies, he is caught. Once [his sister] Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) is in on the secret, he is caught. And what he's caught by is the undeniable fact that how he conducts himself has an effect on more than just him and his victims.

"As far as whether he goes to jail, or gets put to death, or gets hit by a bus or whatever it might be, I can't say."

Dexter continues on Sundays at 9/8c on Showtime. In the UK, season seven will debut on FX (to be rebranded as FOX) in early 2013.
