The Showtime drama drew to a close last night (September 22) with Dexter (Michael C Hall) faking his death and starting a new life, but Phillips told E! Online that he had a different ending in mind when he ran the show.

"In the very last scene of the series, Dexter wakes up," Phillips explained. "And everybody is going to think, 'Oh, it was a dream', and then the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realise, 'No, it's not a dream'.

"Dexter's opening his eyes and he's on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They're just starting to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery, and in the gallery are all the people that Dexter killed."

Did 'Dexter' get the ending it deserved?
Yes - 'Remember the Monsters?' was a fantastic, fitting ending for the series.20.64%
No - This was a shocking ending and 'Dexter' deserved better.54.53%
Maybe - Not sure how I feel about the finale yet...24.83%

Phillips revealed that many of Dexter's direct and indirect victims - including the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), Doakes (Erik King) and LaGuerta - would all return to haunt him.

"Everything we've seen over the past eight seasons has happened in the several seconds from the time they start Dexter's execution to the time they finish the execution and he dies," he said.

"Literally, his life flashed before his eyes as he was about to die. I think it would have been a great, epic, very satisfying conclusion."

However, Phillips - who left Dexter after season four - added that he thought the current production team "did a good job with the final episode".

"I chose not to stay with the show, and so everybody did what they did, and I had no problem with that," he insisted.
