The 38-year-old, who plays Betty's (America Ferrera) sister Hilda Suarez on the series, made the admission while she co-hosted The View on Thursday, Zap2It reports.
"They are coming off this season," she said. "Even in the first episode - it's a two-hour episode, it's brilliant - she starts to make the transition. It's really exciting."
Ortiz noted that Betty's transformation has upset some fans, causing controversy on several blogs dedicated to the show.
She added: "In the original Betty la fea (the Columbian-produced telenovela which Ugly Betty is based on), they tried to make her pretty, and the country went bananas.
"We are not going to turn her into a supermodel. She is Betty and she will always be Betty, but she's going to evolve."
ABC recently pushed the fourth season premiere of Ugly Betty back one week. It will now return on Friday, October 16.
