ABC's new comedy Ugly Betty opened strongly against CBS's reality TV powerhouse Survivor: Cook Islands.
The night opened with Survivor narrowly winning the 8pm slot, averaging 16.6m viewers to Betty's 16.1m. ABC is likely to be pleased with the comedy's opening night, with it doubling its timeslot numbers from the days of Alias. 7.95m tuned in for My Name Is Earl and The Office on NBC, while 5.7m viewers opted for 'Til Death on Fox. The CW performed well with Smallville's average of 5m viewers.
At 9pm, the second episode of Grey's Anatomy's third season won the slot in every major demographic (ages 12-34,18-49, 25-54), achieving a 23% share in adults 18-49 and averaging 23.3m viewers in total. CSI eked out a small victory in terms of total viewer numbers with an average of 23.5m. NBC was a distant third with 9.3m viewers tuning in for Deal Or No Deal. Fox barely beat The CW, with Celebrity Duets averaging 4m viewers to Supernatural's 3.8m.
Shark on CBS beat NBC's ER at 10 in terms of total viewers; the peacock network's long-running medical drama averaged 14.3m viewers to Shark's 14.7m. However, ER was still ahead in most demographics, including adults 18-49 where it achieved a 16% share to Shark's 11%.
