The actress is in advanced talks to make a cameo appearance in the show's current season finale on May 22, according to TV Guide.
It was reported last November that Lohan had signed to play a fallen beauty queen who is forced to work at a fast food restaurant, but filming was put on hold due to the WGA strike. However, producers are now said to be keen for her to return for a "sizeable arc" of around eight episodes in the third season.
It is thought that ABC is hoping to repeat the success of Britney Spears's recent cameo on CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which earned the show its highest ratings of the season.
Ugly Betty has seen ratings slide in the current run.
