Amazing Race 2: Contestants wanted
Published Tuesday, Jul 3 2001, 09:02 BST | By Neil Wilkes
CBS today announced a nationwide search for participants in The Amazing Race 2, a reality adventure series that will pit 11 pairs of American couples against one another in a trek around the globe and will reward the team that reaches the final destination first with a $1 million prize.
The first edition of The Amazing Race 2 will be broadcast Wednesdays (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) in the fall on the CBS Television Network.
Diverse cities and countries spanning the globe will provide the stage for the new reality series from producers Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI, Pearl Harbor) and Bertram van Munster (Cops, Wild Things).
The couples will be selected from a diverse group of people representing a broad cross-section of American society. Each contestant should have a prior relationship with his/her teammate, such as grandfather/grandchild, two best friends, fraternity brothers, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, or virtually any other combination. No prior travel experience is necessary.
Application forms for the reality adventure series are available at CBS.com. Applications are being accepted now through Aug. 3, 2001 and must be accompanied by a three-minute videotape that includes both teammates and proof of valid U.S. passports. Producers will then narrow down the applicants and hit the road in August to conduct interviews with couples in eight cities across the United States. Semi-finalist teams will then be invited to attend final auditions in Los Angeles in September. In the fall, a final elimination will form the group of 11 couples who will be chosen to participate in the series.
The Amazing Race 2 will send 11 pairs of people - who already have a pre-existing relationship - on a trek around the world to 11 cities in approximately 30 to 40 days. At every destination, each couple will have to compete in challenges, and only when the tasks have been completed will they learn their next destination. Couples will gradually be eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million.
The couples will be filmed 24 hours a day, chronicling their journey and the conflicts and deepening friendships that develop through the competition. The couples will be on a strict budget and will have to fend for themselves and the camera crew assigned to them. In some cases, the budget may be so limited, they may be forced to sleep on park benches or use their imagination to conserve their limited funds.
In addition, plane travel will be restricted and the contestants will have to rely on alternate means of transportation: buses, trains, taxis, bicycles, camels and, most important, their own wits to get to their next destination.
