You were approached to audition for Top Model by a man while you were at the mall...
"Yes, while I was eating! He said things like, 'Why aren't you at the competition?!' I was like, 'Who are you?!' To this day I have no idea who that guy is, but thank you to him! He wasn't connected to the competition. He said his girlfriend had tried out and he just thought it was a good opportunity. He was just some random guy!"
Had you considered modelling before that?
"No. I had no modelling experience and I had no idea the show was holding an audition here. He totally enlightened me to the whole deal. I was supposed to graduate in December. I kept going with a couple of classes during the show, but I had to drop a couple."
How frustrating was it to keep hearing that comment about weak frames and one strong picture?
"I'm not sure if I entirely trust that! I would like to see the photos myself. I don't have any experience so I'm not particularly surprised at what happened, but Jay's feedback was, 'Good shot, that's really good', and then finally Tyra would say, 'It's all terrible!' It might just be a matter of opinion but I'd like to see it myself. From having no experience to having one good shot is pretty good for myself."
You admitted to feeling pressure this week to produce several good shots. Did that affect your performance?
"Definitely. I was feeling really nervous and didn't have the confidence that I had on the previous shoots. Even in the photo I look really soft and turned off by it. I just needed to have that confidence and I didn't."
So after the shoot did you think there was a good chance you'd be in the bottom two?
"Yeah, definitely. In comparison to the previous photoshoots where I had so much confidence, in this one I was devastated, thinking it was the worst. I didn't feel good. I knew it wouldn't be so good for me."
How did you find the challenge of flirting with Nigel?!
"It was really funny, actually! They told us we would be meeting a male model with all this good work and who had been a model for a long time. Then you get on the tram and it's Nigel! Not that he isn't super-famous, but I was expecting someone younger. When it was him, I was like, 'Whatever!' It's not really a big deal, you can just talk to him about whatever you want, which is how I did it."
You won the CoverGirl challenge. Would you consider doing more things in front of the camera?
"Definitely. I had a really good time doing that. I thought it was really fun and easy. I was actually surprised by the other girls' performances because they seemed so nervous. When it was my turn, I thought I just wanted to have fun. The people outside didn't even know what was going on."
You also had a good time in the vampire shoot. Jay said you were a natural!
"I did have a good time! It's weakening to be blind and the blood in the tub was freezing cold, but it was a really big challenge! You can't see, you don't know where the camera is, you're just trying to make it look good. It was an off-the-wall kind of deal, but I had a good time with it."
Have you kept your blonde makeover?
"No. I wasn't particularly fond of the blonde hair so as soon as they let me change back to brown I was brown again!"
We've had some pretty dramatic episodes so far, like with Alasia and Anslee's fight. Did you get involved in the drama or stay away?
"I'm probably standing there watching it because it's entertaining but I never get involved. I didn't really have any anger or feel it was necessary to scream or yell. I know they feel cooped up and stir-crazy, but I didn't feel that way so just watching the drama was entertaining to me. I keep in touch with everybody. I talk to Jessica, Brenda and Alexandra regularly. I love them all."
You chatted on the show about studying to be a coroner. Are you still going to do that?
"Yes. I'm going back to college. I'm hoping the exposure from the show will lead me to do more modelling on the side, but I graduate from college this semester so I'll pursue that as well."
Are you back in Hawaii now?
"Yes. The modelling in Hawaii is very local and doesn't really show anywhere else. I would love to move somewhere like LA where I think my market is higher. In Hawaii you can do a lot of swimsuit which gets in the local magazines but no further. You don't want to be in a stagnant modelling industry, you want to be somewhere flourishing like LA."
America's Next Top Model continues next Wednesday at 8/7c on The CW
