America's Next Top Model: Episode 3 recap

The third episode of cycle 13 kicked off with the remaining girls heading to Wilhelmina Models for an interview with the agency's president Sean Patterson.

As the man who will sign the series's winner, he warns them that "being a petite model is even more hyper-competitive than you could ever imagine" before they are given their one chance to impress him with their walk and charisma.

After the interviews, the girls get a shock announcement - one of them "doesn't have what it takes" and is being eliminated straight away. Sean announced that the girl leaving is Rachel, explaining: "I felt like she flatlined. There wasn't a lot there. I felt like she was a little bit boring."

Back at the house, another Tyra Mail arrives, saying: "A top model knows to never mask her best asset. It's time to separate the super models from the mere models." It soon transpires that the challenge involves nailing the perfect picture in one shot using just your eyes, otherwise known as SMEYES ("smiling with your eyes").

Tyra spends time giving the models one-on-one coaching before they are instructed to don full bodysuits for another challenge - whoever can smile with their eyes the best wins dinner with Sean at Tyra's favourite restaurant. The losers will have to work in the kitchen.

Courtney, Lulu, Laura, Kara, Brittany and Bianca win the prize and grill Sean about the modelling industry, while the other girls receive another Tyra Mail about tomorrow's photoshoot: "In some professions, being small is a big advantage."

The shoot takes place at a famous racing track and the task is to pose naked on a horse. Jay is impressed by Brittany, claiming she gave him "Italian Vogue", but notices that Jennifer is "struggling" with her unruly horse. Elsewhere, Courtney is unhappy that she has to wear her protective boot, Laura admits that she "loves nudity" and Bianca is worried about her long blonde wig.

For the judging, the panel are joined by The Hills star Lauren Conrad. They are impressed by Brittany, Lulu, Laura, Nicole, Erin and Rae (who they compare to Madonna). They are less happy with Kara ("not much expression"), Jennifer ("uneven eyes"), Ashley ("looks bored"), Sundai ("lips pursed"), Bianca ("tension in her mouth") and Courtney ("looks angry").

The bottom two are named as Bianca and Courtney. Tyra explains that the judges are "very perceptive" and know Bianca was worrying about her hair and makeup, while they are disappointed that Courtney gave up during the shoot. In the end, Courtney is eliminated although Tyra insists that they are impressed by her ability to model with a broken foot.

"I expected to do a little better than I did so I let myself down in a way," she said. "I just really wish I didn't have a broken foot. I'm definitely not going to give up the modelling and hopefully agencies will look more at what I have to offer them, not just my height. There is a lot more to me than just being 5ft 5in."
