Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's two-hour finale posted an average of 3.5m (1.3) for ABC from 9pm, rising week-on-week but failing to match the ratings for last year's climax.
NBC's NFL pre-season match topped the night with 8.9m (3.0) between 8pm and 11pm, prior to which Dateline had 5.8m (1.5).
Meanwhile, Fox aired an entire lineup of repeats, but still finished in second place thanks to another strong performance from Family Guy (3.7m/1.8).
