Big Brother USA: HoH competition, nominations announced - live blog

Big Brother USA 2012 - Live Blog
The summer is winding down, and that means so's this season of Big Brother. With only five housemates left in the competition, it's game on more than ever, and everyone must do everything they can to remain in a position of power.

After Thursday's double elimination, in which Frank and Joe were finally eliminated, it's down to Ian, Dan, Danielle, Shane and Jenn. We'll be saying goodbye to two players this upcoming week, so the outcome of tonight's Head of Household competition are extremely important. Who will take power, and who will be up on the chopping block? Stay with Digital Spy live from 8/7c to find out!

21:31Well, that's it for tonight. Join us on Wednesday (September 12) at 8pm ET to find out who will win the Power of Veto and who will be going home. I can't wait!

21:29Well, it's time for the nominations ceremony. Hopefully Ian got smart - I'm scared what he's chosen! The first key pulled is for Danielle, so she's safe. The second key is for Dan. AH! What's wrong with him?! That leaves Jenn and Shane on the block and Dan is going to end up winning this again because these people seem to be blind. He tries to give a pep talk that the Power of Veto contest is what counts and everyone should go play hard. The worst part of all of this is how smug Dan must be. Ugh.

21:18Dan and Ian talk upstairs, with Dan saying it's maybe not the best idea. Ian thinks it's awkward not to nominate Dan as he won't be able to explain why he isn't going after him, but Dan suggests he put Shane up instead. But no decision is made - instead, later that night, Ian sees Pandora's Box. He's offered a message from his family and he decides to go for it.

Unfortunately, the message isn't from his parents, it's from Rachel from Big Brother 12 and 13. She gives him "advice" in winning the game. Meanwhile, the other players get actual messages from their family downstairs in the living room. Upstairs, Rachel is giving the worst advice possible and continues talking about Brendon. I will say, I absolutely love Rachel and she gave one of the most fun interviews I've ever done.

21:11Inside, Jenn asks Ian to think hard about who he nominates, and he promises to do so. However, he wants to put Dan on the block as a pawn and to "keep up appearances" since Dan put him up on Thursday. For as smart as Ian is, he still believes that Dan actually plans to honour their final two deal. Wake up, kid! Dan is, of course, not comfortable with the idea of going up and plans to concoct a "crazy plan" to make sure that Ian doesn't follow through.

21:08Ian remembers the answer to the final question, but can he get it in the right slot? He doesn't, but he gets closer than Shane and wins the Head of Household competition. He's extremely overcome with emotion and he'll have some serious decisions to make this week. It really needs to be Dan.

21:03After the next round, Shane gets 3 penalty points, Ian gets 1, Danielle gets 2 and Jenn gets 1 - Ian is back in first place. There's one final question, and while Ian knows the right answer, his ball falls into the wrong section. Jenn and Danielle are way out of the game, so it's down to Shane and Ian. It's a dead tie between them, so they've got one more question to figure out who the winner will be.

21:00Oh, we're actually going by penalty points, so they want the least. After the first question, Shane gets 2, Jenn gets 3, Danielle gets 13 and Ian gets 0. Yes! On the second question, Ian gets 1 penalty point, Jenn gets none, Shane gets 2 and Danielle gets 4 more. The third round sees Shane get 2, Ian gets 6, Jenn gets 12 and Danielle gets 2. No, come on, Ian!

20:56It's time for the new Head of Household competition, however - there are props from all the past games they've played in the competition all set up in the garden. The players will be reminded of an event that took place in the house, and they'll need to roll a ball into a particular number closest to the actual days so that they can accrue points. It's all a bit too complicated - unnecessarily so - and I sort of hope Ian wins it.

20:55The house is a bit of a mess, and Danielle feels like she has to do damage control for everyone - convince Shane not to tell Ian that he was a target, cool Jenn down, etc. She does, however, tell Shane that she had to convince Dan not to put him up. Shane is taken aback but promises not to say anything.

Meanwhile, Dan's trying to talk to Ian about his reasoning for putting him up initially. Ian seems to buy it - I wish these housemates would get smart.

20:48Right, so eliminations are done and everyone is frustrated with Dan. Ian is angry that he was used as a pawn (or so he thinks) and thinks he should have voted out Jenn rather than Joe, who really posed no threat of winning.

Jenn is mad that Dan told her one thing about voting out Shane and then did another by putting Danielle on the block. Dan continues to insist that he "had to do what [he] had to do" to get them through another week. Jenn gets up and walks out of the room, admitting that she can't trust Dan.

20:45Dan considers putting Shane up as a replacement nominee, though Danielle manages to convince him to save Shane this week as he'll keep them safe should he win the next Head of Household competition.

Instead, Danielle goes up - clearly as a pawn. She's none too pleased, however, and thinks he's "pulling a fast one" on her. She tells Shane that Dan never mentioned putting her up. There's a lot of whispering and insanity going on, but Dan tells Danielle that she's got to trust him as no one will vote her out. Well, she doesn't have much choice, does she?

20:42Of course, we all know that Ian won the Power of Veto and saved himself, so Danielle went up beside Joe and Joe went home. It's a shame he came so close to being backdoored, but Dan is ruthless and the fact that they can't seem to cotton onto the idea that he's dishonest and they should get him out is a bit worrying to me. If he wins this whole game, it will certainly be well-deserved.

20:39Following Frank's elimination, Dan tells Jenn that he needs her in "kittie mode" as they're "going to war", so she decides to stick with Dan and Danielle since she doesn't have much of a choice.

Meanwhile, when Dan wins the rapidfire Head of Household contest, he's thinking Ian needs to go as he's a little too smart - though of course he's told Ian that he wants to nominate him as a pawn in order to send Joe home. However, he tells Shane, Jenn and Danielle that they should "take a shot" at Ian if they have the opportunity to do so.

20:37Don't mind the late start tonight - 60 Minutes decided to go nearly 90, it seems. Hmph. In any case, it's time to catch up with the house. We left off with Thursday night's double elimination, and Ian feels bad for sending Joe home, in a way. Jenn is in shock and feels completely alone because she had an alliance with Dan, Danielle and Frank - and since they so easily sent Frank out of the house, they could do the same to her.
