First, however, the players have to navigate a temptation challenge. After greeting the contestants in a room filled with platters of Chinese delicacies (and telling them the US has more than 41,000 Chinese restaurants!), Alison reveals the winner of the temptation will get complete control of the game. All they have to do to win is eat the most Chinese food…
Red Team's Kimmy is immediately against the idea, warning the others: "It's like an alcoholic falling off the wagon." No-one on Red Team eats. However, over on the Black Team the group consensus seems to be someone should eat a fortune cookie (the lowest calorie item) to ensure they have control. Cassandra is the one who steps forward… and ends up eating two cookies at Emily's request.
So, the Black Team wins and Cassandra's prize is to choose the pairings who will face off at the weigh-in: Roy v Emily, Jeremy v Lauren, Nancy v Joe, Chism v Kim, Mark v Chris, Megan v Buddy, and Conda v Cassandra.
Cassandra also scores a 2lbs advantage at weigh-in which she can use herself or give to someone else.
A surprise departure…
Shortly after the Chinese food challenge has ended there's a surprise: Black Team's Joe emerges from his bedroom with a suitcase and announces that he is leaving. He misses his family, and the elimination of brother Mike last week "put the nail in the coffin".
Bob definitely isn't happy. They've never had someone quit the show before and he doesn't buy his "excuse" of missing his family. Bob phones him to say he was going to be a competitor in the house and ask if he really gave himself a chance. But there's no coming back for Joe so Bob wishes him well.
There's no rest for everyone else as they head to the gym for yet another tough workout, which includes Conda and Cassandra facing off in a weight challenge which doesn't end well. Conda thinks Cassandra has cheated in their challenge by skipping a repetition, which sparks an argument between the pair (Cassandra denies it) that continues all the way back to the ranch kitchen.
Water Relay Challenge
Putting bickering aside, there's bad news for the Black Team when they arrive at the next challenge. Joe's departure means they've forfeited his weigh-in face-off and the Red Team are already one point ahead. Unfortunately for the Black Team, it's about to get worse... They lose the challenge and have to watch the Red Team's joy at getting the prize of video chats home. Luckily for some of the players, their partners give them the chats instead.
Last Chance Workout and the weigh-in
After a Last Chance Workout for both teams which includes Dolvett setting up a rematch between Cassandra and Conda to end their dispute, Cassandra reveals at the weigh-in she'll be giving her 2lbs advantage to Megan and Gail.
Highlights from the scale: Kim hates to lose ("especially to a baby") and won't even let her kids win boardgames, and Conda is angry at her low loss. Dolvett says she needs to use that to fire herself up: "You're still in the excuse zone."
While Roy gives her a lifeline by voting for Nancy, a final vote for Lauren from Nancy sends her home in tears.
In a post-show update we learn Lauren has lost 53lbs since arriving at the ranch. She admits that she struggled to see the athlete inside her that the trainers saw at the ranch, so she signed up for a half marathon to push herself and now sees herself as a "true athlete".
