Irina Shabayeva, who won last week’s design challenge, said the competition was "getting stiffer" and "would like to win [immunity] again".
Heidi Klum informed the participants that they would see what Los Angeles is "most known for…movie making".
Tim Gunn greeted the designers at a film soundstage and told them about their task.
"You will select a film genre and invent a character that lives in that genre," Gunn explained.
They had five categories to choose from: action-adventure, film noir, science-fiction, period piece and western.
Nicolas Putvinski hoped that he didn't receive the last group, saying: "Oh God! What if I get stuck with western?"
Shirin Askari and Epperson ended up with that particular field, while contestants received a dossier on their cinematic categories for the one-day challenge. They were then given a half-hour and $150 to spend at fabric store Mood.
Tim stopped into the workroom to offer his advice and critiques. He told Epperson that the ruffles on his western-style dress had a "profound visual impact" , while he informed Ra'mon Lawrence that his sci-fi creation "could be sublime or a big hot mess".
Ra'mon scraps his piece altogether in favour of making a reptilian-like dress from scratch with two hours to go.
Klum joined judges Marie Claire editor Zoe Glassman, John Varvatos and costume designer Arianne Phillips, who deliberate after the runway fashion show.
Nicolas won the challenge with his space ice queen frock.
Louise Black and Ra'mon ended up in the bottom two. Louise was told that her 40s-style-meets-20s-flapper dress was "a snooze fest", while Ra'mon's creation was branded "a home-sewn mess" with "unexceptional" execution and he is informed that he is "out".
