Tim Gunn began the episode by explaining that the designers would be paired up for the challenge and each pair would use a different bird for their inspiration:
Anya and Laura - Raven
Josh and Bert - Amazon Parrot
Kimberly and Viktor - Cockatoo
This episode was full of twists for the designers. First, Tim told them that instead of each pair working together as a team they would be working against each other in a head-to-head challenge.
They later learned they would have to make a second high fashion look inspired by their bird, and then discovered right before the runway that they could only choose one look to show the judges.

Francisco Costa joined Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia for the judging, and it was Anya who emerged as the winner for her black dress which Heidi described as "fashion forward, edgy and cool". The judges liked that it was outside her comfort zone and they could see the raven inspiration without it being too literal.
The judges were less keen on Laura's raven outfit, saying that the leggings were too tight and the ruffles were perhaps too literal. However they did appreciate it showed a different, edgier side to her design and Francisco praised the cut of the jacket.
Anya: Higher score. Laura: Lower score.
Bert admitted that he wasn't that inspired by his parrot, and the judges weren't that inspired by his dress, saying although the bustier was cut well, the silhouette was generic and lacked exuberance.
His teammate Josh was praised for producing something minimalistic for him, although Michael didn't like the shoulder corsage. Francisco appreciated that his references weren't literal, pointing out he used a colour that wasn't present on the bird but still showed exuberance.
Bert: Lower score. Josh: Higher score
Meanwhile, the judges were impressed that Kimberly managed to create her dress in just three hours after her previous design was burned by an iron. They liked the cut of the dress, although Francisco thought it was a bit mature compared to Viktor's dress and Nina thought it had a pageant vibe.
Viktor's colour choice and feathering technique was praised, along with his "impeccable" work and the movement of the dress. However, while Heidi said she felt Kimberly would see a lot of flaws in her design up close she couldn't help preferring it to Viktor's. Nina thought that maybe he became too focused on feathers and the dress lost its lightness and balance.
Kimberly: Higher score. Viktor: Lower score.
It came down to Bert and Laura in the bottom two and it was Bert who was sent home. Heidi told him the judges all thought he was a great designer but this just wasn't his challenge. He agreed that he "missed the mark" and said he wasn't surprised to be leaving.
