'Project Runway: All Stars' episode 7 recap: Puttin' On The Glitz

By
Project Runway meets Broadway in the latest episode of All Stars when award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz challenges the designers to create an outfit for the actress Uzo Aduba in the Broadway musical Godspell.

It's a separates challenge because the outfit will appear in a sequence where a group of actors piece it together bit by bit on the Uzo.

Their brief is the character likes to show off how rich she is - but because the outfit comprises of various different pieces it can be colorful and unique. The key, apparently, is "ostentatious".

As a prize, the winner will have their design actually featured in Godspell and a bio that features in the playbill.

Angela Lindvall, Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman are joined by guest judge Sutton Foster, the star of the Tony Award-winning musical Anything Goes.

Jerell is the only designer safe after the initial runway for his swishy, grey satin skirt and silver jacket with black lace trimmings combo. The other designers remain on the runway:

Michael

He wanted his model to look like she has money but also a sense of humour with his chartreuse-coloured full skirt, flower patterned halterneck, and chartreuse headband. Georgina thinks it's lovely but maybe lacking some eccentricity. Sutton says it definitely draws her eye and the model looks like a rich party girl. Angela agrees, saying she gets a bitchy vibe from the outfit. Isaac appreciates how difficult it is for chartreuse to work in an outfit and he pulled it off here.

Kenley

She says she was excited by the challenge because she lived in the East Village and would throw pieces together all the time. She produces a turquoise, patterned skirt and belted red jacket with fur trimming and fur headpiece. Georgina praises the beautiful cut of the coat but thinks too many elements in the outfit - like mixing prints, polka dots and feathers in hair - take away from the cut. Sutton would quite like to wear the outfit in real life but thinks on stage the patterns might blend, rather than pop. Angela thinks it's eccentric but maybe not 'rich' enough.

Austin

He was going for a "rocker flea market glamour mixed into one" with his black crop leggings, black stole and silverish full-skirted, strap plunge dress. He wanted to embody decadent luxury. Georgina likes that he managed to keep the look modern but can also see his Marie Antoinette inspiration. Sutton thinks the colours would draw attention on stage, while Angela praises the silhouette. Isaac is equally impressed but wonders if maybe the overall outfit is a bit too young for the character - he still loves it though.

Mila

She wanted to embody a woman who shops on Rodeo Drive with her asymmetrical green and yellow skirt, gold top, and white rabbit fur-esque jacket, creating a fun design. Isaac likes the jacket and the "crazy" skirt as separates, but in the same outfit they don't really work. Sutton thinks it borders on a party girl but also someone who might walk the streets. It's not so much wealthy to her as gaudy.

Mondo

He says that actresses share secrets through their clothes and he wanted the old smoking jacket to represent a jacket her dad had given her, teamed together with other pieces found from travels across the world. Isaac thinks the model is sexy in a "crazy, passive aggressive way" and everyone loves the layered, patterned, chiffon dress under the jacket. The only slight critique is from Georgina who says he needs to refine the length at the feet.

Kara

She initially wanted to do a maxi dress but switched to a red pencil skirt and black, furry waistcoat with enormous silver bow. Angela loves the red pop of the skirt but thinks the silver bow is bulky and takes away from the richness. Isaac thinks it's the best work she's done but might need to be a little bit more developed. Georgina agrees some tweaks might be needed, pointing out the odd slit of the skirt. Her ideas are good but some issues need to be resolved.

The winner of the challenge is Mondo. Michael, Austin and Kenley are also safe this week, meaning Mila and Kara are in the bottom two. In the end, Kara is sent home because her construction was off.

"I don't know that this was the best challenge for me. I gave all I had every time," she says. "I've learned how much I've grown over the past five years and how much more growing I have to do creatively. It's been a special time and I'm really grateful for the experience I've had."
