Newton made a surprise appearance at the cocktail party this week in a last-minute bid to join the race for Flajnik's heart, telling viewers the pair had spoken before he became The Bachelor and she felt a connection between them.
However, winemaker Flajnik chose not to give her a rose, meaning that Newton - who appeared on Brad Womack's season of The Bachelor - was sent home.
Writing in her weekly blog for Ladies' Home Journal, Fedotowsky said: "I think Ben sent Shawntel home because he knew keeping her would upset the other girls.
"I'm very confident that Ben liked her (based on their phone conversation prior to Ben becoming the bachelor) more than many of the girls on the show, just not more than his top three. I think he thought it wasn't worth hurting the girls he really did like to keep a girl that he wasn't sure about."
Fedotwosky also said in her blog that she found it hard watching the women's reaction towards Newton - which included several mean jibes - but although she found them rude, she could also understand why they were upset.
"All in all, it was a really tough situation on both sides, and I know Shawntel meant no harm to the other girls by coming to the rose ceremony," she said.
"My heart goes out to her after seeing all of the hurtful things that were said and done to her on the show."
Flajnik wrote in his blog for People magazine that Newton was right to feel a connection between them but that timing was off for starting a relationship.
"I knew if I kept Shawntel around I would lose all the credibility I had built with these women and it wouldn't be easy to dig myself out of that hole," he said.
The Bachelor's host Chris Harrison teased in his Entertainment Weekly blog that Newton's arrival was a "pivotal" moment in the season and changed everything going forward.
"The ladies' reaction was so strong Ben couldn't help but realise just how serious these women were taking this. In return, Ben made the decision to send her home, which sent a definite message to the women that he's equally serious and sincere about this."
The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
