Season 4, episode 10

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR NON-US VIEWERS

So, the Torchwood team have finally uncovered the Blessing - but if their mission to bring back death is successful, Gwen's father is doomed, and could Rex follow him to the grave? Rex and Esther are keeping a batch of Jack's blood safe to use as a weapon, while the representatives of the Families are planting explosives in both Shanghai and Buenos Aires, planning to bury both Blessing sites and keep the Miracle running forever.

With time running out, Rex contacts his boss Shapiro to ask for back-up. The CIA begin to investigate all residences and business within a certain line - Rex and Esther's path to the Blessing. Agent Noah also reveals that he has developed a new piece of software - one that could get a fix on the CIA mole. Shapiro is worried about overloading the agency's systems and delays the trace, but it's clear that time is running out for the treacherous Charlotte Wills...

In Shanghai, Gwen stumbles on the Blessing site and calls Jack to warn him. Jack and Oswald prepare to join her, but the wicked Oswald seems wary of going to his certain death. When he questions Jack about his identity, Danes learns that he is hanging with a man from the future. Jack tells his uneasy ally that he has seen the stars, the universe and the grand future of the human race, and so he knows just how small and pathetic a killer like Oswald is.

The CIA uncovers a site in Buenos Aires with no name and no official paperwork - it's clear the Three Families attempted to wipe it off the map entirely. Rex and Esther head to the site, accompanied by military man Captain Santos, but Charlotte is conversing with her masters. Esther hands over Jack's blood stash to Santos's men, but one of them is also working for the Families. Jack's blood - along with Santos's squad - is incinerated in a huge explosion.

Rex prevents Santos from reporting the explosion - he and Esther have to pretend to be dead, in order to get the Three Families off their tail. Back at the CIA, Shapiro realises that the agency has been betrayed yet again and orders Noah to run his trace software.

Charlotte knows that her time is up and covertly plants an explosive at her desk. She's exposed as the traitor, but the bomb soon destroys the evidence and kills poor Noah and Shapiro. Looks like Charlotte has got away with it...

Jack and Oswald reunite with Gwen and the trio break into the Shanghai base, while Rex and Esther infiltrate the Buenos Aires site. Back in Wales, Rhys has acquired a police visa from loveable Sergeant Andy. Rhys sits with Gwen's father Geraint as he waits for news from Gwen, while Andy spends his time with a Jane Doe, with no family or friends.

At the Shanghai site, Jack discovers a mysterious box, but what's inside? He tells his 'pal' Oswald, "I've changed my mind, I'm so glad you're here!". Jack, Gwen and Oswald descend into the depths of the Shanghai pit and are quickly held at gun-point, but Oswald is strapped up with explosives. Advantage - Torchwood! But there's a problem - in Buenos Aires, Rex and Esther have been captured! It's a stand-off.

Luckily, Jack has the most powerful weapon of all - his mortal blood. It turns out that (deep breath) the Blessing transmits a morphic field bonding the human race together. When the Families fed it the blood of an immortal - Jack's blood - the Blessing copied it like a new template, making everyone in the world undying.

The Families want to tear down the global system and to rebuild the world to their choosing, but Jack's now-mortal blood endangers the plan. If his blood gets into the Blessing, he can make the whole world mortal! Except there's a hitch - Jack's blood has to be introduced to both Blessings - in Shanghai and Buenos Aires - and Rex and Esther's blood stash was destroyed in the explosion.

But there's yet another twist! Rex reveals that his own veins are pumped full of mortal blood - prior to the explosion, he replaced his own blood with Jack's by transfusion. Ordinarily, the process could have killed him, but this is Miracle Day!

The Blessing will take every drop of Jack and Rex's blood, but the two men prepare to sacrifice themselves to save the world, with Gwen pulling her gun on Jack. But the Family member in Buenos Aires won't give up that easily - he callously shoots Esther, warning Rex that if the Miracle ends, his friend (and possibly more?) will die.

Rex is torn up, but Gwen tells him he has to keep going - she's willing to kill her entire team to end the Miracle. Gwen shoots Jack and his blood spills into the Shanghai Blessing, while a tearful Rex rips open his chest wound, his own blood gushing into the Buenos Aires Blessing.

Death returns to the world - Gwen's father wakes for a brief moment, then finally passes away in peace. Both Blessing sites begin to crumble and collapse, but as the sinister 'Mother' attempts to flee, she is grabbed by a deranged Oswald. Jilly and Gwen flee in a lift, but suddenly Jack springs back to life - GAAAASP!

Jilly isn't keen on waiting for Jack, but soon gives in after a strong right hook from Gwen. Oswald detonates his explosives, killing himself and the Mother, while Jack and Gwen escape. However, Jilly isn't quite so fast, and appears to perish in the flames. In Buenos Aires, Rex uses his last reserves of energy to kill Esther's attacker. Captain Santos and his team arrive just in time, but both Rex and Esther are barely clinging on to life...

Many days later - the Torchwood team attend a funeral for a fallen comrade. Rex is alive, it transpires, but poor Esther has joined the likes of Owen, Tosh and (of course) Ianto. On the plus side, Esther's sister and young nieces are in attendance, having emerged from Miracle Day unscathed.

But what's this? Jilly has also survived and reunites with the mysterious Blue-Eyed Man. On the run from the FBI and CIA, Jilly is distraught, but her new friend offers her a new job. "We very nearly succeeded," he explains. "As trial runs go, it was good". With the Miracle over, the Three Families are instigating 'Plan B' and Jilly signs up to be a part of it.

Back at the funeral, traitorous Charlotte Wills passes on her condolences to Rex, having apparently escaped justice. But just then, Rex receives a message - the late Noah's software has been retrieved, revealing Charlotte as the mole! Exposed as a traitor, Charlotte shoots Rex.

She's shot dead by CIA operatives, but Rex is too badly wounded and dies. Gwen laments yet another death, but suddenly - GAAAASP! - Rex returns to life, Jack-style. As he rips open his shirt, the bullet wound heals perfectly. Rex turns to Jack - "You, World War II - what the hell did you do to me?!"

--- 4-5-6 DATA ---
• After an uneven run, Torchwood: Miracle Day ends strong with a powerful finale. It's just a shame that this incident-packed episode feels a little rushed, particularly given that some previous instalments were sorely lacking in plot development.
• There's something very...Freudian about the Blessing, isn't there? Just saying.
• One of the highlights of 'The Blood Line' has to be Jack and Oswald's confrontation 15 minutes in - Barrowman and Pullman are both excellent.
• Speaking of Oswald, his eventual death was inevitable, but we're glad that no attempt was made to redeem him - he dies a monster. On the other hand, we're happy that Jilly was spared - there's a lot more potential in this character and Lauren Ambrose has been fantastic throughout.
Miracle Day ends on a cliffhanger in more ways than one. With the show's future apparently uncertain, will we ever find out if Torchwood can sustain two immortal leading men?
