The 22-year-old actress has been tapped to star as Lily Van Der Woodsen in the new series, which focuses on her teenage years in Los Angeles.
The early plot sees Serena's mother move in with her older sister (Krysten Ritter) in the San Fernando Valley after falling out with her parents. She then has to learn to adapt to a life without luxury and navigate the Hollywood excesses of the 1980s.
Shiloh Fernandez, who has previously appeared in Jericho and Cadillac Records, has also joined the cast as Owen, a Valley punk with a sharp wit.
Characters from the spinoff will be introduced through an episode of Gossip Girl slated to air in May.
