The 57-year-old actress, who was last seen on screen as Martha Kent in season six, has reportedly signed on to reprise her role towards the end of the show's current season.
Producers are said to be working out the exact date of O'Toole's reappearance, but reports suggest she will be back around May.
Martha's return will apparently coincide with an "unexpected surprise".
Smallville continues Friday, January 29 at 8pm on The CW.
