Recent reports have suggested that the Kiefer Sutherland-fronted series was on the verge of being axed.
Jon Cassar wrote on his Twitter page at around 10pm GMT tonight: "News from the 24 set, the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching (sic)."
NBC reportedly approached Fox about picking up the show earlier this month, but those negotiations apparently fell apart.
In February, 20th Century Fox confirmed plans to make a 24 feature film set in Europe. State of Play screenwriter Billy Ray was hired to pen the script.
The film will see Sutherland's Jack Bauer face enemies outside of the US.
The programme, currently in its eighth season, premiered in November of 2001. Upon its debut, the show was hailed for its real-time storytelling device and intense action scenes.
