Janeane Garofalo slams '24' exec Joel Surnow: "He hated my politics"

By
Janeane Garofalo has hit out at TV writer/producer Joel Surnow over his work on 24.

Garofalo - who played FBI agent Janis Gold in the Fox drama's seventh season - claimed in an episode of podcast Going Off Track that Surnow "hated" her liberal politics.

She went on to accuse him of planning to use the character of female US president Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) as a device to warn viewers against electing Hillary Clinton as Commander-in-Chief.

"He wanted Cherry Jones to play the president that season as a slam to Hillary," Garofalo said. "He wanted it to seem unappealing. Unfortunately, the fans loved Cherry Jones as the president - she was wonderful - but it was made to frighten you from Hillary.

"This might sound all like, 'That's crazy', but don't underestimate a right-winger, especially with power and money. They will use any platform."

However, Surnow has since denied the claims, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he had not been influenced by any "political agenda" when hiring Garofalo or devising the Allison Taylor character.

"I hired [Janeane] because she's an extremely talented actress who I liked in everything I had ever seen her in," he insisted.
