Final 32 performance: Bettis was sixth on in the first group of semi-finalists on Feb. 4. It was thumbs down all-round from the judges, all of whom had expected better but were disappointed with what he gave with his performance of "Thank You". The viewers agreed.

Next appearance: Bettis has a shot at appearing in the wildcard show on March 4, although I wouldn't hold your breath.

Who is his American Idol? Janet Jackson, whom he describes as "a positive influence for the public, especially teens and younger, in pursuing dreams above all else."

Why does he think he's cut out to be the next Idol? "I am who I am because of my idols and I feel obligated, yet empowered, to give it back and pass it on."

Favourite judge? "Simon or Paula. Simon tells how it is most of the time. Paula was an idol for me."
