The judge is rumoured to be walking out on the show just weeks before the new season airs due to her dissatisfaction with show bosses, including Simon Cowell.
"Paula has a reality show on MTV and her jewellery line. She's got no reason to put herself through the stress of the show if she doesn't want to," a source told MSNBC.
"She's all but done and given her other successes she has no reason to be afraid about speaking out now."
Abdul has had a seat at the American Idol judges' desk alongside Cowell and Randy Jackson since the show debuted in 2002.
The next season will see record producer Kara DioGuardi join the panel.
It was earlier reported that Idol bosses have told Abdul to stop criticising the show after she made a series of negative comments in recent interviews.
