New 'American Idol' winner announced

Fantasia Barrino of High Point, North Carolina has won this season's American Idol competition.
Sixty-five million votes were cast by the American viewing public ahead of tonight's glitzy two-hour live finale on FOX television. During the finale, fans of Barrino and runner-up Diana DeGarmo packed out viewing parties held in local stadiums, hosted by American Idol 2 runners-up. Clay Aiken hosted events at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina for Barrino, while Kimberley Caldwell was at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia with DeGarmo fans.
Auditions for American Idol's fourth season will now be getting underway, with the series returning to FOX in January 2005.
