The singing hopefuls met the legends at Studio A in the Motown Historical Museum on West Grand Boulevard.
Motown, which created hits for The Four Tops, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and The Supremes, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
All the Top 10 will sing tracks from the label's back catalogue on this week's programme. Smokey Robinson will perform with former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard on the results show.
Robinson has appeared on the series before, playing a medley of hits on the season six finale.
Motown's founder Gordy praised the Idol contestants, but warned that they must retain their humility as their fame increases.
"They're starting on a much higher mountain,” he told The AP. "We started from the floor and they should be grateful for that and the competition and how to be gracious winners and gracious losers."
