The chatshow host will join fellow panellists Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi as the fourth judge on the Fox reality show after Abdul announced that she was quitting last month.
Writing on her Twitter account, Abdul said: "I think Ellen will be a great judge on Idol. She is wildly funny, talented and I wish her the best of luck!"
DeGeneres had previously admitted that she hoped Abdul was "okay" with her new role because she did not want people to think that she had stolen the position from her.
She will begin her judging stint once the audition stages for the upcoming ninth season have finished.
