Here's what the judges had to say:
Randy: Says he feels like the season "is really getting rolling now" and gives him a standing ovation. "Crazy, unbelievable, R&B star right there," he adds.
Ellen: Likes every song he has chosen so far and jokes that tonight's choice was "educational". She calls it the "one to beat" and "fantastic".
Kara: Admits that she "didn't get it until tonight", saying that he went from being a singer to someone who could potentially be a great singer.
Simon: Says he's gone from being a "pussycat to a lion" in one week. Adds that it's a great song choice, suited him and didn't sound dated: "This by far is the best performance you have given in the competition so far."
Randy: Says the "John Mayer vibe" is good for him but he didn't bring anything new and it wasn't as good as the original. Also says there were some pitch problems and it wasn't special.
Ellen: Thinks it was a better song choice but agrees there could be a little more soul in it. Advises him to try to feel the song a little bit more if he attempts a track like that.
Kara: Says it was "way better than last week" but is still concerned that she has no connection to him when he is singing. Thinks he needs to take risks and get out of his comfort zone.
Simon: Suggests he could be in trouble this week because "there was nothing to get excited about, it was a so-what performance". Says he struggles with the believability and he was forgettable.
Randy: Loves him "channelling Hendrix through Texas". Says it might not have been the best vocal, but his guitar playing is "hot" and he can see him making that kind of music and winning.
Ellen: Says he can't go wrong with that song and he "sounded great". Suggests that on paper everything is there, but thinks he has a "stiffness" on stage and needs to perform more.
Kara: Jokes that everybody knows she is a fan, but tonight he "took two steps backward". She explains that it's a singing competition and everything that was distinct about him went away, and he didn't take the song to another level.
Simon: Says he kind of agrees with Kara because he "turned into somebody you will see in any bar across America" and he "doesn't have the grit" in his voice to make it authentic.
Randy: Calls it an "improvement" from last week and likes the addition of the guitar. Adds that it didn't sound as "sound-alike" as the past and he has found his own niche.
Ellen: Jokes that somebody took the unripened banana and put it in a paper bag to make it ripen quickly. Brands it "so much better" than last week and says he has the "most unique style of everybody here".
Kara: Thinks that everybody is rooting for him and he has an "incredible recordable voice" that producers and writers would die for.
Simon: Says it was a "million times better" than before, and he shouldn't be nervous because he has a good voice. However, he doesn't get the feeling that he is taking part to win and he needs to have a "killer, killer instinct".
Randy: Thinks the falsetto at the end was "hot" but he doesn't think a great song needs a "wild arrangement". Says he didn't love it, and advises him to "just sing a nice song" next time.
Ellen: Wants him to sing and move because he's a dancer and should be playing to his strengths. Doesn't think it was the right song because it's hard to sing and not current, but she hopes people vote for him.
Kara: Says they all like him as a person and when he started moving the performance got better. Thinks the first song he ever sang for them was great, and she doesn't understand what has happened.
Simon: Suggests he "move, not sing" because "this is not working out for you". Compares it to a theme park performance, calling it a "corny, bad version" of the song: "You are getting this completely and utterly wrong."
Randy: Says there were a "couple of bright moments" but it just wasn't a great performance, calling it a tough song to sing and saying he needs to pull it back a bit more.
Ellen: Loves his style, but says it just didn't work for her and it was "off a little bit", suggesting that he pushed too hard.
Kara: Says what he can do is impressive but he is "doing too much" and needs to pull it back and look at the meaning of the song: "We don't need every trick in every performance."
Simon: Thinks the judges are "frustrated and disappointed" because he "waters down" the songs, making them lose their importance, which in turn makes it difficult to for them to take him seriously as an artist.
Randy: Calls it "pitchy and all over the place". Doesn't think it was the right vibe for him, because he's not a soul singer.
Ellen: Disagrees and says that while there were pitch problems, she likes that he takes chances. Tells him he set the bar high with his Paula Abdul track and he needs to top that.
Kara: Agrees, but says she likes him and does see potential for that to happen. Wants him to surprise them and not play it too safe.
Simon: Thinks the fact he hasn't chosen the right song in two weeks is a problem because there are so many to choose from: "I'm disappointed still in you."
Randy: Didn't know if he was going to like it, but thinks he can "really sing" and it was "200% better than last week".
Ellen Appreciates that he has more confidence and sings well, but calls the song "a little forgettable".
Kara: Says she "really liked it" and likes the fact that he is consistent when he steps on the stage. Thinks he is going to get "better and better".
Simon: Didn't like the song and calls it "all over the place", suggesting he has gone backwards. Advises him to work out what kind of artist he wants to be considering his age, because this week's performance was too old-fashioned.
Ellen: Doesn't think he has any charisma or stage presence but he is "so adorable". She suggests if he "can act, then you have it made because you can also sing a little".
Randy: Admits he didn't really get it and it was "very karaoke" because it had "nothing special, nothing jumped out and it wasn't unique".
Kara: Liked the song choice but is frustrated that he didn't make it his own: "You look the part and you play the part, but it's not all there yet."
Simon: Disagrees and calls it a "marked improvement" on last week. Appreciates that he listened to the criticism and returned to what they liked about him initially. He's also impressed by his attitude and work ethic.
Randy: Calls it a bold move to not use his guitar, but likes that he took a chance and came out of his comfort zone. "It had a couple of little pitch problems," he adds. "But I liked it!"
Ellen: Says the pitch problems didn't matter because there was "so much passionate and intensity" in his performance.
Kara: Thinks it was a big improvement from last week, and that she can "hear him on the radio right now" because he has a commercial voice and look.
Simon: Says that vocally he is "head and shoulders above" the other boys, but he needs to have self-belief: "I'm just waiting for you to totally, totally connect, lose your nerves, choose the right song and sing as well as we know you can - you may be the one to beat."
