American Idol has opened online auditions for the first time.

As part of the show's tenth anniversary commemorations, Fox has announced that Idol hopefuls can upload performance videos through social networking site MySpace until October 6.

Entries can be no longer than 40 seconds and must be a performance of a song from a list posted on the audition site. Choices include 'Ain't No Sunshine' by Bill Withers, 'Kiss A Girl' by Keith Urban and 'Copacabana' by Barry Manilow.

A "select number" of auditions will be chosen and the performers invited to try out in Los Angeles.

This is the second online contest which the show has held, having previously invited songwriters to apply online in 2007.

American Idol returns in January 2011 on Fox.
