Paul McDonald has become the sixth contestant to be eliminated from American Idol's tenth season.

The singer, who had fallen into the bottom three alongside Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone, was sent home tonight after it was revealed by host Ryan Seacrest that he had received the fewest number of votes following last night's performance.

Paul sang one of his favourite songs from the early stages of the auditions, Rod Stewart's 'Maggie May', before his exit at Jennifer Lopez's request.

The singers who are still in the running are Lauren Alaina, Casey Abrams, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Haley Reinhart, Stefano Langone and Scotty McCreery.

The Top 8 took to the stage for special group performances, with Lauren and Scotty taking on Lady Antebellum's 'American Honey' while Haley and Casey performed a jazzy rendition of Sarah Vaughan's 'Moanin'. Jacob, Paul, James and Stefano came together for a version of Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Sound Of Silence' and 'Mrs. Robinson'.

Tonight's episode also featured performances from former Idol winner Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean with their hit song 'Don't You Wanna Stay' as well as Rihanna with her new single 'California King Bed'.

American Idol continues next Wednesday on Fox.
