The 26-year-old, who was eliminated from American Idol's tenth season on Thursday, told reporters that writing his own music is a necessary part of finding artistic fulfillment.
"I've been touring for years with my band The Grand Magnolias, and it's one of those things where there's a bunch of singers all around but it's also good to have artists who can write and showcase what they do," he explained.
"I'm not very good at singing other people's songs, which is why I started writing my own. You showcase who you are by performing your own songs. There's only so much you can do with what others wrote."
He went on to say that he relies on the emotional connection provided by songs he has written himself, adding: "Original music comes off as more real to me because it is more real - it came from very real things in my life."
