The singer became the first man to leave the season ten finals last week, following a string of female departures including Pia Toscano.
During an appearance on NBC's Today show this morning, he was asked if he thought it was a "foregone conclusion" that a man would win the title.
"The guys do have an advantage I feel like because the girls vote," he replied. "I'm pulling for the girls. There are two left and I hope they make it far. We shall see."
McDonald exited the Fox competition following his performance of 'Old Time Rock and Roll' by Bob Seger on Wednesday's memorable movie songs week. He will join the rest of the show's Top 11 on the summer tour.
This week's American Idol will see the remaining seven singers - visited by Bruce Springsteen in the recording studio on Friday - tackling songs from the 21st century, while David Cook and Katy Perry will perform on the results show.
American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.
