Just four American Idol contestants remain after Paris Bennett was voted out on Wednesday night.
An estimated 45.5 million voters chose her to go ahead of second-worst Elliot Yamin.
Tuesday’s show saw the hopefuls sing one song from the year of their birth and one from the current Billboard singles chart.
Bennett chose Mary J. Blige’s Without You and Kiss by Prince – a performance deemed “screechy and annoying" by Simon Cowell.
Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee and Yamin remain in the contest.
