A tight-run contest has seen Elliott Yamin voted off American Idol, making way for the final.
With 33.06 per cent to his competitors' 33.26 and 33.68 per cent, unlucky Yamin lost by a hair's breadth.
The 27-year-old took the news graciously, however, commenting: “I was a counter clerk at a pharmacy. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this shot.”
After Tuesday's performace of Ray Charles' 'I Believe To My Soul' Simon Cowell had foreseen his loss. "Your songs are not going to carry you through to next week — that's the problem," the judge told him. "However, you are a great guy. You are a great singer."
Remaining hopefuls Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks must now prepare for a tough competition for first place at Hollywood's Kodak Theater next week.
