The 20-year-old student and pizza maker from St. Louis sang 'Lean On Me' by Bill Withers on the Thursday night (February 2) episode of American Idol.
Tyler said: "You made me cry. I tell you what man, that was so beautiful you made me cry, that's how good that was right now. You made me tear up and get all crazy inside. I haven't heard anything like that."
"Is that a yes?" joked Lopez, before giving Kloeckener a second yes. A third yes from Randy Jackson sent him through to Hollywood with full support from the panel.
After Kloeckener left the audition room, Tyler repeated: "That is phenomenal."
Kloeckener had earlier shared the story of how he became a singer, saying he had moved from a small school to a large public high school where he was bullied, and it was only a chance encounter with the choir director when he was singing in the hall that stopped him from dropping out.
"Once I joined choir it was a turning point," he said. "I found a couple of friends who were really supportive. They helped pull me through. I definitely gained a lot of confidence and I think it made me who I am today and I'm a lot tougher because of it."
American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.
