The Top 25 hopefuls - 13 boys and 12 girls - performed live for the first time across two shows this week, and also faced the public vote for the first time this season.

The 10 contenders who were put through to the next round by public vote are: Hollie Cavanagh, Colton Dixon, Heejun Han, Jermaine Jones, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Shannon Magraine, Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Elise Testone.

Phillips and Sanchez topped two Digital Spy polls to find readers' favourite contestants.

Six contestants - DeAndre Brackensick, Reed Grimm, Jen Hirsh, Brielle Von Hugel, Erika Van Pelt and Jeremy Rosado - then sung for the last three 'wild card' places.

Jennifer Lopez chose Rosado, Steven Tyler elected to save Brackensick, while Randy Jackson chose to put Van Pelt through to the Top 13.

Grimm, Hirsh and Von Hugel were therefore eliminated from the competition, along with Adam Brock, Baylie Brown, Hallie Day, Creighton Fraker, Eben Franckewitz, Reed Grimm, Haley Johnsen, Chase Likens, Aaron Marcellus and Chelsea Sorrel.

It was also announced that Mary J Blige will mentor this year's contestants.

American Idol continues next Wednesday (March 7) on Fox.
