McCreery told the newspaper that he was "ecstatic" to have recorded the track, saying: "It's cool to still be connected to the show every week."

He added that he sent McGraw a note to let him know he had recorded the song for Idol, and that the country star responded by saying, "'Oh, man. That's really cool. I'm sure you nailed it".

Last season's exit song was recorded by American Idol winner David Cook, who sang a rendition of 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' by Simple Minds.

McCreery won the tenth season of American Idol last year, beating runner-up and fellow country singer Lauren Alaina in the May 2011 finale.

His debut album Clear As Day has since gone platinum, he picked up the 'Best New Artist' prize at the American Country Awards and he is currently on tour with Brad Paisley.

American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.
