It is not yet clear which songs Coldplay will perform on the programme, due to air May 3.
It is Coldplay's first appearance on the show.
Musical acts which have already appeared on American Idol this season include LMFAO, Jennifer Hudson, The Wanted, Nicki Minaj and Lana Del Rey.
This week's American Idol results show will air tonight (April 26) at 8/7c on Fox and feature performances from Katy Perry and Stefano Langone.
