The Anger Management actor was first linked to the spot earlier this month when he was rumoured to have expressed an interest in replacing departing panellists Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show on Monday, Sheen confirmed his interest in joining American Idol, saying that he was intrigued by the offer after producer Nigel Lythgoe mentioned his name.
"It seems so out of the blue that it almost made perfect sense," Sheen explained. "I thought this could be a lot of fun. Seriously... I'm genuinely interested. It's so different, it could be radical."
Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno later that night, Sheen added that he would require his Anger Management team at the FX network to approve of the job and that he hoped a "charitable element" would be involved.
Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Adam Lambert have also been linked to a judging role on the show in recent weeks.
