Mariah Carey has officially signed a deal to join the judging panel and is rumoured to be earning an unprecedented $17 million for season 12 of American Idol.

According to Deadline, show bosses are now considering country singer Paisley as a new addition to the show.

Paisley, who has performed on American Idol before, also has recorded music with highly successful Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

It is now believed that Randy Jackson is likely to return to the panel.

Show executives are apparently also considering the addition of a fourth judge, to compete with four-paneled programmes such as The X Factor and NBC's The Voice.
