Toscano, who finished ninth on American Idol during 2011, signed a deal with Interscope and 19 Recordings in July last year, describing it as "a dream come true" for her.
The singer told The Hollywood Reporter: "It makes sense for me because I really want to get my music out there.
"It's been a little while, yes, but to be honest, I'm happy for this delay because I don't think I was ready for it when this all started happening."
Toscano added that while she was "over the moon" to sign her record contract, she "never realised how difficult it would be" to develop her own material post-Idol.
"Coming from a show where you're singing other people's songs to becoming an artist... You have to work harder than ever," she added.
Toscano also hinted at differences of opinion during the recording process, saying: "There were a lot of opinions going on, and there was also mine. The audience sees through everything, and if you are not true to who you are, they are going to know.
"I wanted an album that I could believe in and I could stand by, and I have the perfect team to do that right now."
