Phillip Phillips: 'I never believed I would win American Idol'

By
American Idol's reigning champion Phillip Phillips has admitted that he never expected to win the series.

Phillips was crowned American Idol's eleventh season winner in May 2012, going on to score a top ten album with The World from the Side of the Moon.

He has now disclosed to Billboard that he only auditioned for American Idol after seeing the success of quirky season ten contestant Casey Abrams.

"I honestly didn't think people would like me - I didn't care what happened on the show," he explained. "It never seemed like a competition. I always made sure I was having fun and the band was having a good time."

Phillips further explained that his top priority during his time on American Idol was to maintain his artistic credibility.

"I didn't give in to what some people give into - the fame," he said. "I went in, played the song and went back and got in bed. I hope it opens doors for other [non-pop singers] to do the show."

The 'Home' singer recently commented that he believes American Idol's new judges are capable of helping Randy Jackson find the next pop superstar.

"It's definitely interesting. Keith Urban is an amazing musician, and I'm curious to see how Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj will judge," he recently said.

American Idol premieres its new season on Fox on January 16 in the US, and on 5* on January 17 at 8pm in the UK.
