Persistent reports have revealed that Urban's fellow panellists Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have a difficult relationship, although the duo recently joked that they put their feud behind them by watching a sex tape.
Asked by People about sitting between two big characters, Urban joked: "Yeah, Randy [Jackson] and [host] Ryan [Seacrest] are huge personalities. I do my best to keep them civil. Oh, and Mariah and Nicki are in there too."
However, Urban explained that the panel are bound to clash as they are looking for different things from the contestants.
"First of all, it's four passionate people who really care about the artists," he said. "Secondly, it's four people who just got thrown onto a dance floor without any sort of choreography and were told 'dance together'. So some toes get stepped on - and we're figuring it out."
Meanwhile, Jackson insisted that the judges are "getting along" and claimed that arguments are a normal part of the process, saying: "Since this show started there have been very different, distinct personalities. It's always been a very happy, funny, dysfunctional family."
American Idol's Nigel Lythgoe recently expressed regret about the publicity the feud has attracted, saying: "I've said all the way since we began this show - it's about the contestants."
The new season of American Idol starts with a two-night premiere next Wednesday and Thursday (January 16 and 17) on Fox. UK viewers will be able to watch the new season on 5* when the first episode debuts at 8pm on Thursday, January 17.
