'American Idol': Who should be the 2014 judges?

By
American Idol rounds up its 12th season this week with Candice Glover and Kree Harrison battling for the title in the US's biggest talent show.

However, the question of who should win the series isn't the one that's on everyone's lips this week. Instead, everyone wants to know who will be judging series 13 in 2014.

Randy Jackson, the only remaining original Idol judge, has already confirmed that he is finally quitting the show (the rumour is that he wanted to quit five years ago, but nobody could understand his incoherent mumbling... Ba-dum Tish!). Meanwhile, the additions of Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have ended up creating the most snoozy series of Idol since the words Kara and DioGuardi were associated with the show.

Facing increasing competition from The Voice USA and an overwhelming sense of fatigue after 12 years of warbling, tears and big bright Ryan Seacrest smiles, the new panel of judges face the biggest challenge the show's encountered since the exit of Simon Cowell. How can American Idol become important, relevant and must-watch TV all over again?

Mariah Carey on Idol and Britney Spears on X Factor proved that the size of the artist and the amount of publicity they can generate through 'Diva Behaviour' headlines doesn't necessarily translate to great TV or viewing figures.

Mariah's hilarious spat with Minaj that leaked before Idol was golden publicity, but the seemingly hate/hate relationship between the two popstars hasn't generated any real heat on the show itself. So it might be time to think outside the popstar box slightly with the panel.

P Diddy

Why go hunting for Justin Bieber, when you could get his manager Scooter Braun? Why go for a young Disney pop princess like Selena Gomez when you could have a music heavyweight like P Diddy? Haven't the most enduring TV talent show judges - Cowell, Nigel Lythgoe, Louis Walsh, Randy - always been the ones with industry experience rather than pop records?

The list of rumoured judges is lengthy, ranging from Alicia Keys, Pink and Miley Cyrus to Harry Connick Jr and Bon Jovi. Whether any of them would want to be associated with a show that looks like its on its last legs is another matter. Nobody wants to be one of the judges that finally kills off the biggest American TV franchise of the last 20 years.

American Idol airs its two-night season finale tonight (May 15) and Thursday at 8/7c on Fox.

The finals will be broadcast a day later - Thursday and Friday - from 9pm on 5* in the UK.
