FOX have announced details of the US version of hit UK series Pop Idol.

American Idol: The Search for a Superstar will premiere Thursday, June 11 at 8.30pm ET / 7.30pm CT on the network, with a provisional run of 22 episodes.

The programme features would-be solo singers vying for the grand prize of a recording contract and a guaranteed album and single release. Viewers vote to eliminate contestants based on their live performances of songs during each show. A panel of professional judges offer their opinions on each of the performances.

The UK winner, Will Young, landed the highest-selling debut single ever - shifting over 1.1m copies in the first week of release.

The first episode will chart the auditions, which begin in Los Angeles on April 20. The second will go out live, after which two episodes will air per week through into September.

Auditions will be held in Los Angeles on April 20, Seattle on April 23, Chicago on April 26, New York on April 29, Atlanta on May 3 and Dallas on May 5.

Application forms and further information can be found on the official website.
