Hines Ward has been crowned the winner of the 12th season of Dancing with the Stars.

The American football player won the competition after beating out third placed contestant Chelsea Kane and runner-up Kirstie Alley on the ABC series.

Ward and partner Kym Johnson were the longtime favourite pair of the judges and were the only couple to achieve perfect scores on multiple occasions throughout the competition.

Speaking after the win, Ward said: "You know, starting this competition, I never thought I would be in the finals but I owe it all to Kym. She's an amazing teacher.

"I want to thank the judges for giving me constructive criticism to get better week to week but I also have to thank all the fans! We love Steeler nation and appreciate all the votes. I hope I represented well for the city of Pittsburgh."

The episode saw the return of all 11 original celebrities as well as their professional dance partners, each of whom participated in several dance routines throughout the broadcast.

Former Dancing contestant Mike Catherwood appeared in a parody video segment which featured him in a tight-fitting leotard and bright pink leg warmers as he "auditioned" for several professional dance roles. He then appeared live on stage for a performance with partner Lacey Schwimmer.

Petra Nemcova returned for an encore performance of her popular waltz to Josh Groban's 'You Raise Me Up'. The singer flew in to surprise Nemcova with a live performance of the track. Kendra Wilkinson also appeared with partner Louis van Amstel to reprise the pair's popular salsa routine from earlier in the season.

Chris Jericho and Sugar Ray Leonard hit the stage for a fight-themed dance-off with their respective partners Cheryl Burke and Anna Trebunskaya. Meanwhile, Wendy Williams and DWTS partner Tony Dovolani's light-hearted "interview" about the finalists brought laughs to the ballroom. Romeo also recreated his final waltz with partner Chelsie Hightower.

Professionals Chelsie Hightower, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Lacey Swimmer and Cheryl Burke also took to the floor to perform the Macy's Design-A-Dance winning routine, with music provided by The Go-Gos with their hit song 'We Got The Beat'.

The Black Eyed Peas appeared to perform a show-stopping rendition of their new single 'Don't Stop The Party' while singer and former DWTS contestant Sara Evans sang her new single 'A Little Bit Stronger'.

Dancing With The Stars will return to ABC for a new season on September 19.
