Chaz Bono has declared that competing on Dancing with Stars helped him to become a more confident person.

Bono and his professional partner Lacey Schwimmer were voted off Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday after falling into the bottom two with Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

The 42-year-old told Good Morning America that he considers joining Dancing with the Stars to be one of the most rewarding accomplishments of his life.

"This experience really exceeded any expectations that I had and was something that will probably forever affect my life," Bono told GMA host George Stephanopoulos. "It gave me a confidence in myself that I didn't have before and a physical awareness [as well as] a knowledge that I can do more than I thought I could. I can get through a lot."

Bono also credited the show with helping him to find "common ground" with his mother Cher.

"When I told my family I was doing [Dancing with the Stars], they were a little surprised and I don't think they thought much [of it]," he recalled. "Then, they all really got behind me… and were rooting for me because they saw how hard I was trying and how much I was pushing myself.

"This was something that my mum and I could really have common ground on because… she knows what it feels like to go out and perform in front of an audience."

Cher vigorously defended her son against criticism from the Dancing with the Stars judges by referring to Len Goodman as a "grumpy old man".

Bono has also complained that it wasn't fair when Bruno Toniolli compared him to a "cute penguin trying to be a big, menacing bird of prey".

Dancing with the Stars continues on Monday and Tuesday on ABC.
