Rome: The Complete First Season on DVD

Written by Bruno Heller and directed by Michael Apted (The World is Not Enough), this epic 12-part 6-DVD series is a groundbreaking, authentic portrayal of the fall of a Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire, through the eyes of ordinary citizens and famous historical figures. It is a powerful yet intimate story of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives and brings a fascinating and influential period of history back to life.

The series begins in 52 BC, as Gaius Julius Caesar completes his conquest of Gaul after eight years of war, and prepares to return with his army to Rome. While Caesar's self-interested niece Atia and long-lost paramour Servilia anxiously await the general's return, ruling patricians despair that Caesar's homecoming will disrupt the status quo and threaten the extravagant prosperity they've enjoyed at the expense of the lower class. In the Senate, old-guard leaders plot to undermine Caesar's influence by convincing his old friend, Pompey Magnus, that the general is a threat. At the frontline, two mismatched soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, see their fortunes rise following several serendipitous missions. As Caesars legions move closer to Rome, allegiances are put to the test for soldiers and civilians - and the escalating tensions climax with a full-scale conflict destined to change history.

In addition to all 12 original episodes the DVD set, packaged in a wooden boxset unique for a home video release, also boasts a monumental array of bonus material and interactive features including eight revealing audio commentaries with cast and crew, 'Friends, Romans, Countrymen', a 15-minute introduction to the characters, Photo Gallery: with over 50 never-before-seen images plus lots more.

Rome is available to buy from Monday, July 24.
