Bad Lashes

This year's X Factor live shows got off to a typically tense start, with the two remaining girl groups, Bad Lashes and Girlband, winding up in the bottom two. Mentor Louis Walsh was unable to choose between his acts, instead forcing a "deadlock" situation that saw Bad Lashes sent home. We called Sam Bennett from the Geordie four-piece to find out how the girls are coping with their early elimination.

How are you bearing up today?
"Obviously we're gutted but we're going to work hard and see what happens next. We're sticking together as a group and we really believe we can get somewhere using The X Factor as a platform."

Why do you think your performance wasn't as popular as the others?
"I don't know, but when there are 12 acts and everyone's so talented it must be hard for people to choose between us. The solo girls must have got so many votes because they are all absolutely amazing. I think we definitely got the North East vote, but relative to the 12 million people watching it obviously wasn't enough!"

Simon said you looked like "four separate singers" as opposed to a group that gelled. Do you think he had a point with that statement?
"Nooooo! But in all honesty this was our first gig together as a group, so it was really hard work for us, especially trying to nail those harmonies. We just wanted to get onstage and enjoy our performance, which is exactly what we did. We had the best fun ever on Saturday night."

Were you annoyed that Louis forced a "deadlock" situation instead of choosing between you and Girlband himself?
"No, I think it was a really hard situation for him to be in. If I was in his position, I wouldn't have known what to do. He's a genuinely nice person and I don't think he could have made that decision because he didn't want to let either of his acts down. But we did overhear him saying to someone backstage, 'I didn't think that would happen'. I think he thought we would have got more votes than Girlband."

What was he like as a mentor?
"He was fabulous. He used to text us every day and he called us today to say, 'Come on girls, keep your chins up'. He wants us to keep going with the group and see how far we can get."

Do you think he's the best judge to be mentoring a girl group?
"I think he really understands the whole group thing, but on the other hand he's only really dealt massively with boy groups. For him to have two girl groups in his category, I think he was a bit like, 'Ooh, what do I do with all these girls?'"

Was there any rivalry between you and Girlband?
"Do you know what, we all got on really well. We used to have tea together in the (X Factor) house and we used to lend each other clothes and make-up and stuff. We were all really good friends with each other."

Do you think Girlband are a better group than you?
"I don't know. We've got to have self-confidence though and keep believing that we deserved to stay in the competition, but things happen for a reason and this definitely isn't the end of Bad Lashes."

You complained earlier this week about the number of "sob stories" on The X Factor. Do you think you were at a disadvantage because you didn't have one?
"The thing is, we're just normal girls. Nothing bad's ever happened to us, nothing amazing's ever happened either and we just went on there and gave it our best shot. We didn't have a big story but we just thought the public would have voted for us more!"

The X Factor continues Saturday at 7.25pm on ITV1.
