Ashley Cole has defended his wife's choice of outfit for the X Factor performance of her new single.

Cheryl received criticism for dressing provocatively - in a black see-through top and military-style jacket - while she sang 'Fight For This Love'.

However, her footballer husband said that he approved of her attire, The People reports.

"I wouldn't have wanted her to wear anything else. She looked beautiful. I really liked the outfit," he commented.

Ashley also revealed that his wife puts a lot of pressure on herself

He stated: "The nerves sometimes lead to tears, but I try and make sure I'm always there to help. Cheryl still worries that things might not work out for her.

"She has worked incredibly hard to get where she is but fears it could all end tomorrow. When Cheryl first thought about going solo she got scared."

Ashley added: "She gets very nervous so I try to help her as much as I can. I tell her, 'You're going to be great', but it doesn't always help when someone else says that."

He could be seen in the X Factor audience clapping Cheryl's performance of her first solo single.

"I thought she was brilliant, I was so proud," the 29-year-old said.

"Fingers crossed that she gets her number one and then we will both be very happy. She deserves all the good that comes to her."

'Fight For This Love' is expected to top the UK singles chart later today, after achieving record first day sales.
